The Big Texan Steak Ranch is located on Interstate 40 in Amarillo, Texas. The famous steak house and motel was originally built in 1960 in the 4500 block of East Amarillo Boulevard, along Historic Route 66. When Interstate 40 bypassed amarillo in 1970, the steak house moved to its present location, along I-40, about a mile south of its original location. The Big Texan is famous for its free 72 ounce steak contest, for any soul who desires to eat 5 pounds of steak and all the trimmings, and see his name posted on the board. The steak house also features a large bull statue in front of the building and a green, booted dinosaur in its parking lot. Next to the steak house is the Big Texan Motel, which is a 54 room structure designed to look like an old Texas town, complete with a Texas shaped swimming pool.
