The Southern Hotel is located on South Grand Avenue in El Reno, Oklahoma, 2 blocks south of Historic Route 66. The historic hotel was built in 1909 as a stop off point for travellers along the Rock Island Railroad. The age of railroad travel was in full bloom at the beginning of the century, but by 1967 the train stopped going through El Reno and the once elegant Classical Revival hotel lost its business overnight. Through the years it fell into disrepair, but was restored in the 1980s and since then has been used as a senior center. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
