The Mather Inn is located on East Canada Street in Ishpeming, Michigan. It stands on the site of two former houses, the Baron House, built in 1875 and the Nelson House, built in 1880, both of which were constructed by Robert Nelson, the founder of Ishpeming. The Baron House burned down in 1879 and its replacement, the Nelson House, burned down in 1928. William Mather, president of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, financed construction of a third building on the site, the Mather Inn, which opened in 1932. When the film Anatomy of A Murder was shot in town the cast and crew, including actor James Stewart, stayed at the Inn. It is said that Duke Ellington wrote the score to the film in his room here. The Inn fell on hard times in later years and closed its doors in 1987. Since 2004 the building has been undergoing restoration. The Mather Inn was listed on the National register of Historic Places in 1978.
