His cause of death has been in question for many years, but lead poisoning is considered the leading choice, although renal illness is thought to have been contributory. His last words are also in question, but are thought to have been "Pity, pity - too late!" His funeral was held on March 29 wit ha procession followed by a reported 20,000 followers. He was originally buried in Währing Cemetery then reburied in the Zentralfriedhof in 1888. The house which once stood here was torn down in 1904. A marker notes the location.
