John Burgoyne's home is on Hertford Street in London. It was here that 'Gentleman Johhny' spent the last years of his life as a respected playwright. He had commanded the British troops in Saratoga, New York during the Revolutionary War, and his surrender in October 1777 proved be a great turning point of the war. He returned to England in disgrace and never held command again. He instead turned his attention to serving in Parliament, and writing plays, including The Heiress, which opened in 1786. He resided here until his death in 1792.
