James Stewart's birthplace site is on Philadelphia Street in Indiana, Pennsylvania. The screen legend was born here, on May 20, 1908, in a house that once stood at this site. His father, Alexander Maitland Stewart, was the owner of J.M. Stewart and Co., a local hardware store that had been in the family since 1848. The Stewarts lived here until 1913 when they purchased a home on Vinegar Hill. The house has been demolished, but the original stairs leading up from the street still remain, along with a plaque and marker honoring the site. Just down the street the Jimmy Stewart Museum stands on the former site of the family hardware store.
